Nail injury

by Professor Chua Chung Nen

This man was holding a nail against the wall while his friend was hammering. Unfortunately, the nail bounded and hit his right eye. Examination showed the nail entered the right nasal sclera. CT scan showed the nail penetrate but did not perforate the globe. The nail was removed followed by primary repair under general anaesthesia. Intravitreal antibiotics (vancomycin and amikacin) were given to prevent infective endophthalmitis.
