Painful blind eye

Photo by Professor Chua Chung Nen

This 50 year-old woman was blind in the left eye (no light perception) after she sustained ocular injury in her teenage year. The eye had been treated with mydriatic and topical steroids for the past 2 years because of rubeotic glaucoma. In the past few days, she complained of severe pain. Slit-lamp examination showed epithelial defect with hypopyon. She was given intensive antibiotic and lubricants. The pain settled as the epithelial defect reduced in size and the hypopyon disappeared.
