Subepithelial scars

This 54 year-old
non-contact lens user developed two corneal ulcers in her left eye one year
ago. The culture was negative and the ulcers responded to topical
antibiotics. At a recent visit, she complained of recurrent foreign body
sensation in the left eye. The fluorescein stain shows tear film instability
over the scar. She responded to topical artificial tear.
Healed ulcers with subepithelial
scars.
Superior subepithelial scar with
ferritin deposits (faint yellowish epithelial staining).
Inferior subepithelial scar with
ferritin deposits.
The fluorescein stain shows early
breaking up of tear film over the scars.
